Bread Crumbs

Bread crumbs can be purchased at most food stores, but you can save a little money by making your own — it's easy, here's how.

Start by saving bread and crusts from any bread that is old. Discard any parts of the bread that contain mold. You may use white, wheat or any bread.

Put the bread in a baking dish and place in a 200° oven for about one hour, or until the bread is completely dried. Grind the dried bread in a food processor.

If you don't have a food processor, break the bread into small pieces and place in a zip-lock bag. Press out the air and seal. Use a rolling pin to roll back and forth over the bag until you have the desired size of bread crumbs.

Four slices of bread produce approximately one cup of fine bread crumbs. Season with salt, herbs, garlic powder, onion powder, or others if you wish. Bread crumbs can be stored in an airtight jar for future use.
